The Goblin's Story
It all started
in 1996 when my Dad, Charles Gotthard, a well-known SA sculptor
and I decided to venture out in search of the perfect venue to start
our DREAM restaurant. Well, guess what we found?! "The Goblins
Cove" is a dream come true for all of us, and when we came
upon this unique property it was exactly what we had envisioned.
We
knew the original owner of the property; her name is Marike De Leeu
and around 20 years ago when my Dad first met her she was a Buddhist
and expecting her love child. The main reason she was living on
her own in this unusual "house" if you could call it that;
was because she wanted her child to grow up in the serenity and
beauty of the country. As you can see her religious views played
a large part in the architecture of the building, which we have
preserved.
When
we eventually went back to-what was just a magical childhood memory
I remembered- it had been standing open for about 17 years, so as
you can imagine there was very little left, but Charles being the
creative mind behind everything saw the potential behind the ruins
& I noticed the colourful energy streaming out of the ground
and so we got started on a whimsical venture that till this day
has been a fantastical, loving & dedicated journey.
My
mother Marguerite & I did the interior decorating and eventually
put everything together, discovering & overcoming the fine line
drawn between fantasy & kitsch. Little under a year later the
project was complete and WOW, what can we say, we are so proud.
Then
on 18 March 2001 we had a devastating fire which completely destroyed
the main restaurant.
A
note written in my Diary 2001/03/18: "Our Goblin's Cove has
burnt down-a sole wrenching experience that has changed our lives
& brought sad tears to everyone standing watching the unique
creation go up into flames. Now I understand what I read & was
perplexed by a week ago-a Japanese Haiku-which made the message
so clear "My barn having burned to the ground, I can now see
the MOON"-There is insight, knowledge & discovery in the
barn as well as in the moon, & now I know both. Its the beginning
of another journey, only this time there will be more.
My
Dad & I, & our amazing team then took on our new journey
& gained from the insight we had been shown through this experience
& we then lovingly rebuilt the restaurant, adding many new features
while remembering & honoring the special original 'Goblin's
Cove' we all hold deep in our hearts.
My
Mom & Dad; the Creators of the Delicious Cuisine; all the dedicated
staff who have made this possible; and I, Michelle, your Hostess;
are proud to be a part of the precious time spent between you &
your loved one's, & would like you to sit back, relax and we
hope you have a Magical Experience with us.
“CREATIVITY
IS LOVE MADE VISIBLE” Charles
Gotthard.
